Merritt College Evacuated as a Precautionary Measure

High temperatures contribute to fire danger

OAKLAND – An afternoon brush fire in the Oakland hills threatened nearby Merritt College on Sept. 26, 2017.

Oakland Fire Department (OFD) officials evacuated nearby streets as a precautionary measure.

Merritt College followed the OFD recommendation to evacuate the campus, as did nearby schools Skyline High and Carl Munck Elementary.

Merritt College’s Peralta Community College District (PCCD) Safety Aides Aaron Walker and Alonzo Flores assisted Alameda County Sheriffs in facilitating the smooth egress of Merritt employees and students from the campus

Interim Oakland Fire Chief Darin White praised the close familiarity of multiple fire departments contributed to the well-coordinated effort.

The fire was located  behind the new subdivision of homes at the old Leona Quarry.  The fire was completely contained and Merritt College resumed its complete class schedule on September 27.
