BA, American Studies (1999)

Why BA?

It’s hard to imagine a world where someone can fulfill all of their career goals without having a Bachelors degree.  Of course, many people today can specialize in a high-demand skill and make a great living.  For the rest of us, the Bachelors degree is just the beginning of our academic journey.

Why American Studies?

The American Studies program offers a unique and innovative cross-curricular and collaborative approach to the study of English and history.

Of course, American Studies is not a common major.  Therefore, most people who want “big money” jobs lean towards the trendy Computer Sciences or stalwarts like Law or Medicine. American Studies tends to attract students who love reading and digesting demanding texts on difficult topics.  Afterwards, the students need to persuade their audience towards their perspective.

However, before my American Studies career, I was a Biology major specializing in Plant Sciences.  So, you may be asking why I switched from Biology to American Studies?  Truthfully, I got burned out on all the non-Plant Sciences required courses.

Why UC Santa Cruz?

UC Santa Cruz parents, grandparents, guardians, and other family members play critical roles in the development of our students academically and socially.

Location

Who has two thumbs and loves the beach?  This guy!  Santa Cruz is a great, sleepy beach town in California approximately 90 minutes south of San Francisco.  I really loved its distinct confluence of beach, redwood trees and rolling hills.  I lived 3 blocks from the beach and was able to walk my puppy on the beach before and after my classes.

Campus

“What about the university?”, you might ask.  UC Santa Cruz is one of the nine University of California undergraduate campuses.  What makes UC Santa Cruz special is its location that is somehow on the coast and still somehow also nestled in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains.  The decentralized layout of the campus buildings is unsettling if you expect your university to have dedicated areas for classrooms, administration, housing and dining.  UCSC disrupts the traditional university layout in favor of a series of smaller autonomous colleges.  Each college contains classrooms, dining facilities, housing, administration offices and a nominal focus on an academic course of study.  As a result, the unique experience at UCSC is having classes at multiple colleges and having to walk through the redwood forest to and fro.

How does this benefit your organization?

Appropriately, you value critical thinking, diligent communication, and a reasoned consideration of the crucial inputs to decision-making, right?  In a nutshell, that’s American Studies.

In conclusion, give me a call today!  Let’s discuss how, together, we can make your organization thrive!
